Common problems
Washer problems we can help with
These are typical causes, not a diagnosis. The only way to know for sure is to look at the appliance.
Won’t drain or leaves water in the drum
Often a clogged pump filter or hose, a failed drain pump, or a lid or door problem that stops the cycle.
Won’t spin or spins slowly
Can come from an unbalanced load, worn parts such as belts or a motor coupling, or a control problem.
Leaking
The cause can be a hose, a door seal or gasket, the pump, or an overloaded or oversudsed wash. Where the water appears is a useful clue.
Loud banging, grinding or squealing
Worn bearings, shock absorbers or suspension parts are common causes, and so is a load that’s out of balance.
Won’t start or stops mid-cycle
May be the lid switch or door lock, the control board, or a power supply issue.
Smells musty
Usually built-up residue in the drum, door seal or drain. Sometimes a cleaning routine is the fix, not a repair.
Before you call
Things worth checking first
- Check that the washer is plugged in, the breaker hasn’t tripped and the water valves are open.
- Make sure the lid or door is fully latched and the load isn’t lopsided or overstuffed.
- If it won’t drain, unplug it first and check for a clogged drain hose or pump filter. Have towels ready.
- Use the right amount of high-efficiency detergent in an HE washer. Too much causes suds, odors and drain trouble.

Questions
Washer repair FAQ
Is it worth repairing my washer?
Often yes, especially when the repair is a small part and the washer isn’t near the end of its life. A common rule of thumb is to think hard about replacing once a repair costs about half of a new one. Try our repair-or-replace calculator, or call for an honest opinion.
My washer is full of water and won’t drain. What should I do?
Turn it off and unplug it. Check the drain hose for kinks and the pump filter for a clog, if your model has an accessible one. If it still won’t drain, call or text us.
Do you repair front-load and top-load washers?
Yes. Tell us the brand and model if you can find the label, and we’ll let you know whether we can help.
Will I know the price before you start?
Yes. We explain the problem and give you the price for parts and labor, and no repair begins until you approve it.
